New Opportunities and Innovation through South-South and Triangular Cooperations is the theme chosen to celebrate the  United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2025 . In recognition of the continued importance of South-South cooperation, the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 58/220, designated 12 September as the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation. This date marks the adoption of the 1978 Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA), a pivotal framework for technical cooperation among developing countries. Poverty and Vulnerabilities in the Global South.

Multidimensional poverty being higher than monetary poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa can be explained by several interrelated factors. While monetary poverty focuses solely on income thresholds, multidimensional poverty considers deprivations across health, education and standard of living. Factors that can explain the difference are:  (a) access to basic services  health . Limited access to healthcare services and poor health outcomes are prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. High rates of undernutrition and child mortality (due to high prevalence of preventable diseases such as malaria or pneumonia and low coverage of immunization among other factors) contribute to multidimensional poverty;  education . Many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa face low school enrolment, high dropout rates and poor quality of education. This study is the beginning of a longer-term effort to understand and amplify youth perspectives on South-South and triangular cooperation. The initial findings highlight the important role of youth in shapingSouth-South and triangular cooperation initiatives , particularly in education, healthcare, employment and sustainability. However, the narratives also reveal challenges related to limited institutional support, limited perceived participation in decision-making and the rapidly changing nature of cooperation frameworks. Moving forward, UNOSSC aims to expand data collection, deepen analysis and establish a continuous process of youth engagement. By ensuring that youth voices are systematically integrated into the cooperation efforts , this initiative will contribute to a more inclusive, responsive and forward-looking approach to both South-South and triangular cooperation, ultimately strengthening their impact on sustainable development.
